When Tight Muscles Don’t Want to Let Go

Sometimes muscles become so tight that even simple movement feels difficult. And when you’re not quite ready for more active exercises, your doctor may want another way to work with those tense areas first.

At Hershey Family Chiropractic, E-stim is one of the tools we can incorporate into your care when ongoing muscle tightness is making movement difficult. It’s simple, takes only a few minutes, and can be adapted to what’s going on with your body that day.

What Is E-Stim, Exactly?

E-stim uses small pads placed over the area your doctor wants to address. The device sends gentle electrical stimulation through the pads, creating movement in the muscle. The goal is to interrupt the signal telling that muscle to remain tight, giving it an opportunity to begin relaxing. If you’ve ever used a TENS unit during physical therapy, the sensation may feel familiar.

There’s nothing you need to actively do during the session. You can simply settle in while the E-stim does its work.

When Might E-Stim Be Used?

E-stim can be particularly useful when muscles feel extremely tight or movement is limited. It also gives our doctors an option when someone isn’t quite ready for more active exercises yet.

Your doctor may consider E-stim for:

  • Ongoing muscle tightness
  • Areas where the muscles feel difficult to relax
  • Times when movement is particularly limited
  • Situations where you’re not ready for more active exercises yet

A session typically lasts around 12 minutes and may be incorporated into your broader care plan.

A Simple Addition to Your Care

E-stim isn’t something every patient automatically receives. Like the other therapies available at Hershey Family Chiropractic, we’ll recommend it when we believe it makes sense for what’s happening with your body.

For some patients, it becomes a familiar part of their visits. Dr. Epstein says there are even patients who come in already knowing what they want: “I want stim today.”

That enthusiasm doesn’t mean E-stim is right for everyone. Your doctor will consider how you’re moving, how tight the area feels, and what else is included in your care before making a recommendation.

And we’ll explain what we’re doing along the way, so you understand why E-stim may have a place in your visit.
